10/27/25 Update:
URGENT: Cat 5 Hurricane Melissa Threatens Haiti! 🌧️
From The Weather Channel: "Category 5 MONSTER Has Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti In Its Path.”
With sustained winds of 165 mph and gusts over 260 mph, Melissa is one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record — and the most powerful storm on the planet this year.
While the storm's eyewall, will hit Jamaica and remain the most dangerous, farther to the east, in Haiti, torrential rain, flash flooding and mudslides pose the greatest risk to lives and property.
Our team reports the edge of the storm has already hit, bringing relentless rain and winds. We’ve lost contact with our staff in the south, where power and phone lines are down.
In Port-au-Prince, our headquarters and supported orphanages remain safe — but the worst part of the storm is yet to come tonight and tomorrow.
Thousands of displaced families, already living under tarps or out in the open, have nowhere safe to go. Their lives and what little they own hang in the balance.
Our team reports as of 3:00 PM CT Sunday, rain has been falling for more than 80 hours in Haiti, and the risk of unprecedented flooding and mudslides is growing by the hour.
We are preparing for an immediate response — as soon as it’s safe to move — but we urgently need your help.

10/28/25 11:50 AM CT Update:
Hurricane Melissa—now a Category 5 storm—has unleashed catastrophic rainfall, flooding, and landslides across the Caribbean, with Haiti among the three hardest-hit nations.
Early reports indicate that parts of Port-au-Prince, Les Cayes, and the southern peninsula have experienced severe flooding, collapsed homes, and blocked roads. Many areas are completely inaccessible, with roads washed away and entire communities cut off.
It’s been raining for days, and it remains unclear how long the heavy rainfall will continue.
HRI has been working in southern Haiti in partnership with the World Food Programme since last year, and many of the communities we’ve supported are now severely damaged or unreachable.
Thousands of families already displaced by gang violence are now enduring this second disaster in makeshift shelters with no protection from wind or rising water. As one displaced man said, "There's no way out, except to die." WATCH VIDEO FROM THE WEATHER CHANNEL.
Children in a dozen HRI supported orphans were safe at our last check-in, but it's still too unsafe to go outside and assess damages there just yet.
Meteorologists warn of up to 16 inches of rainfall and further life-threatening landslides. Power is out across large sections of the country, hospitals are running on generators, and drinking water systems are already contaminated by floodwaters.
Urgent assistance is needed so that as soon as it’s safe to access these areas, we can deliver life-saving food, clean water, and emergency supplies to orphans and families in desperate need.

Urgent: Emergency SUPPORT Needed

SITES FOR DISPLACED PERSONS
Hurricane Melissa has brought devastating conditions to thousands of displaced families at camp sites for displaced persons in Port-au-Prince. After days of heavy rain, what was already flooded was further exacerbated last night when Hurricane Melissa turned back east again.
When the storm turned back east last night, torrential downpours began again around 3 a.m., flooding already-saturated camps. Many shelters now have torn tarps, muddy floors, or are completely underwater. The roof of one of the main buildings has collapsed, allowing rainwater to pour directly inside.
Mothers and children spent the night standing to stay dry and safe. Pregnant women and nursing mothers held their babies in their arms through the night as rats and worms entered the flooded shelters. Others had no shelter at all—forced to face the storm outside without even a tarp for protection.
The situation is dire. At least 220 different camp sites for displaced persons urgently need new tarps to protect families from ongoing rain. In addition, there is a critical shortage of hygiene supplies, bleach, and disinfectant to prevent disease outbreaks, such as cholera.
We are urgently asking for your immediate help to provide:
  • Emergency tarps
  • Hygiene kits
  • Disinfectant supplies to ensure basic sanitation
Every contribution will directly help families enduring these unbearable conditions. Please consider standing with them today. Together, we can bring relief and restore dignity to those who have already lost so much.
UPDATE ON ORPHANS:
At this time, we’ve finally been able to reach all but two of the dozen orphanages HRI supports. Thankfully all those we’ve reached are safe and unharmed!
However, the remaining two orphanages are located in very precarious areas - flood zones that also have extermely high gang activity, so we ask you to please continue praying for their safety.
Heavy rains are still falling across Port-au-Prince, and we are praying earnestly for them to stop soon.
SOUTH HAITI:
Our team in southern Haiti remains extremely difficult to reach due to poor cell service, but what we have heard so far is complete devastation. There is massive flooding, landslides, washed-out roads, collapsed buildings, and countless homes destroyed. Even the region’s largest agricultural farms have been wiped out. It’s just heartbreaking.
HRI will likely be partnering with the World Food Programme (WFP) to deliver emergency aid. We’ve been serving as their implementing partner throughout the year, reaching 37,000 people. The collaboration has gone very well, and now we are preparing to respond together again.
WFP is currently conducting their hurricane damage assessments and will soon inform us which communities we’ll help lead food distributions in. While WFP will provide the food, we will urgently need to supply many other essentials to help families recover and survive the days ahead.

Impact & Relief Update

We are still unable to reach two orphanages to confirm their status. We suspect the issue is power-related, as days of heavy rain prevented solar panels from charging and supplying electricity.
Our team has been out conducting assessments all day at orphanages and displacement sites. We will share more detailed updates once they return later today.
Many of you are eager to see images of the conditions on the ground; unfortunately, limited internet access has made uploading media difficult. With the sun finally out in Port-au-Prince at least, we hope to restore power and connectivity soon so you can see what our team is witnessing firsthand.
In southern Haiti, we are still awaiting updates from the World Food Programme (WFP) to determine exactly where we will be delivering emergency assistance. Unfortunately heavy storms continue in south Haiti across the peninsula bringing more damage to an already devastated area and further complicating relief efforts.
Your support remains critically important. We have raised nearly $14,000 thus far which enabled us to begin distirbutin of aid today!
HRI has already:
  • Placed orders for trucks of clean water to be delivered to IDP camps today
  • Begun purchasing tarps and bleach in bulk
  • Started preparing hygiene kits and other vital supplies to prevent disease
We are committed to acting swiftly to meet urgent needs and will keep you updated as relief efforts progress.

"WE LIVE IN A DITCH''
Ananias and her family once had a modest home — a small place filled with love and laughter. But when gangs attacked their neighborhood, they were forced to flee for their lives. The attackers looted their home, took everything of value, and then set it on fire. In a single day, Ananias lost everything — her home, her belongings, and her sense of safety.
With nowhere else to go, she and her husband sought refuge in a site for displaced persons. When they arrived, they had three children. Today, they have four — including a baby born in the camp.
As Ananias put it, “We live in a ditch.”
When Hurricane Melissa brought devastating floods, even the little they had managed to rebuild was destroyed again — soaked, covered in mud, or washed away completely.
Yet, despite everything, they continue to hold onto hope — and that hope is sustained by compassion.
Your support helps families like Ananias’s receive clean water, tarps for shelter from the rain, hygiene supplies, and emergency relief after losing everything not once, but twice.
Together, we can remind them they are not forgotten.

🌪️ Hurricane Melissa Devastates Haiti
Hurricane Melissa struck Haiti with catastrophic force, causing floods, landslides, and the collapse of homes and businesses.
Tragically, the death toll has risen to 43, with 13 others still missing, according to the Haitian government. You can watch this video to see part of where we are working in the south.
Hunger Relief International is responding, providing life-saving assistance to affected communities. Your support is making a critical difference for those struggling to survive in the aftermath. From water to tarps to cleaning supplies, every dollar is providing relief. Thank you for your support!

11/6/25

Thanks to your generous support, thousands of people affected by Hurricane Melissa now have access to clean, safe drinking water.
Families who were displaced by the storm are smiling again, knowing their children will not fall sick from contaminated water.
Your contribution has brought more than water—it has brought relief, hope, and a renewed sense of security to communities in desperate need. Every cup of water distributed is a lifeline, and your partnership has made this possible.
From all of us on the ground and the families whose lives you’ve touched, thank you for standing with them in this critical time. Together, we are turning the tide against the hardships caused by Hurricane Melissa.

11/7/25
When Hurricane Melissa swept through Haiti, it left behind devastation that few could imagine. At camps for displaced persons, many families lost what little protection they had — the makeshift tarps and coverings that shielded them from the relentless rain and scorching sun were torn away and destroyed overnight.
But because of your generosity, hundreds of pregnant women, children and elderly now have new tarps, restoring shelter, shade, and dignity to their daily lives.
These tarps are doing more than keeping out the rain — they’re keeping out despair. Families are once again able to sleep dry, protect their few belongings, and find privacy as they rest, bathe, and change clothes. During the heat of the day, the tarps provide a cool refuge from the sun’s burning rays as children nap.
Your support brought immediate comfort and security to those who needed it most — a tangible reminder that they are not forgotten.
On behalf of every family now sleeping safely under a new tarp: Thank You! Your compassion rebuilt hope in the aftermath of the storm.
Additional distributions of water, tarps and cleaning supplies will continue next week as we are together serving thousands impacted by Hurricane Melissa!
