Catagory 5 Hurricane Melissa has unleashed catastrophic rainfall, flooding, and landslides across the Caribbean, with Haiti among the three hardest-hit nations.
Early reports indicate that parts of Port-au-Prince, Les Cayes, and the southern peninsula have experienced severe flooding, collapsed homes, and blocked roads. Many areas are completely inaccessible, with roads washed away and entire communities cut off.
It’s been raining for days, and it remains unclear how long the heavy rainfall will continue.
HRI has been working in southern Haiti in partnership with the World Food Programme since last year, and many of the communities we’ve supported are now severely damaged or unreachable.
Thousands of families already displaced by gang violence are now enduring this second disaster in makeshift shelters with no protection from wind or rising water.
Children in a dozen HRI supported orphans were safe at our last check-in, but it's still too unsafe to go outside and assess damages there just yet.
Meteorologists warn of up to 16 inches of rainfall and further life-threatening landslides. Power is out across large sections of the country, hospitals are running on generators, and drinking water systems are already contaminated by floodwaters.
Urgent assistance is needed so that as soon as it’s safe to access these areas, we can deliver life-saving food, clean water, and emergency supplies to orphans and families in desperate need.
