HRI visited an informal internally displaced persons camp located in downtown Port-au-Prince, Haiti. When we arrived to assess the situation, we discovered the deplorable living conditions of up to 3,000 displaced persons - mostly women, children, and the elderly. The entire “camp” had only one medical doctor, and he was working with no resources, not even a chair.

‍They have no food, no water, no shelter, no sanitation, and no medical supplies. ‍

‍Within minutes, HRI rushed a child who fell into a coma to the hospital, helped a woman deliver her baby on the ground, and gave CPR to a woman who passed out and shortly after became unresponsive.

‍THE SITUATION IS CRITICAL!

‍The population of this informal camp are all recent victims of armed groups in Cité Soleil where more than 400 people were killed, and hundreds of homes were burned to the ground. The victims are now living in an unprotected and exposed space. This is particularly dangerous for young children and vulnerable mothers who are already weak and hungry, and those in need of immediate medical attention.

‍Many children display signs of acute malnutrition, various infections from open sores, and diarrhea is rampant.

HRI needs your support to ensure that no child dies of hunger or dehydration due to diarrhea, that no other babies are born on the filthy ground, and that there is organized care provided to those in need.
