First Harvest in Community Garden, Guatemala

This week the 40+ women of Nueva Candelaria, Guatemala, with HRI staff on site, harvested beans, cucumbers, squash, and an assortment of other vegetables from the community garden. It was a thrilling day and the women were so excited about preparing the fresh veggies both at home and for the School Feeding Program. This community garden is just the first step in a multi-year project to create sustainable community, home and school gardens in rural villages of Guatemala. Quick Update!

There has been so much going on in Haiti and Guatemala over the last month there was no time to post it all! Please check out our 1st Quarter report – it’s right on the homepage and chock full of exciting updates. Just to recap the month of April so far: we have hosted multiple mission teams in Haiti and Guatemala, Fellowship Church, MA and their team built a new school kitchen in Nueva Candelaria, new shelving was built in an orphanage in Haiti, our gardens are thriving, and we are preparing for a busy summer building stoves, hosting work teams, beginning school construction, and of course, fulfilling our core function of fighting childhood hunger!!

A Community Garden is Planted

Over 40 women, children and men showed up for five days along with Prof. Jim Schrefler, our amazing “Garden Donor,” and the HRI team to take a piece of land that looked like a garden could never be planted and turned it into a huge community garden with 15 different varieties of vegetables planted, a drip irrigation system installed and a promise from the Mayor’s agronomist to join the effort! It was an astounding week in Guatemala for everyone involved and we are so excited that the community of Nueva Candelaria showed up “en masse” to participate. Now this is sustainable community development at its very best.

Food, Water, Gardens and Sanitation!

Our focus in 2013 remains on fighting childhood hunger in Haiti and Guatemala. As we work on providing orphans and vulnerable children with nutritious food each day, we are also looking at other basic necessities that we all need to survive and thrive. That is why HRI is working on water for villages in Guatemala, vegetable gardens in Haiti and Guatemala (thank you Professors Brandenberger and Shrefler of OSU for partnering with us!), and improved sanitation and hygiene practices in orphanages in Haiti. Sustainable development requires certain basics be in place and as we work towards creating self-sufficient families and communities we must first ensure that they have access to these basic necessities.

30 Safe, Energy Efficient Stoves for Guatemala

HRI has received commitments to fund a minimum of 30 safe, energy efficient stoves in Guatemala in 2013. A minimum of 10 stoves will be constructed in the village of La 46, as part of a grant from Jewish Helping Hands. We are tremendously appreciative of JHH for their support and for their recent visit to Guatemala to see our work. The vulnerable women and children that will benefit from these stoves are excited and enthusiastic to be a part of the process of saving lives and trees!

Capacity Building in Haiti

HRI has launched a six month training program for orphanage managers in Haiti – the focus of the training is on sanitation and strategies to improve personal hygiene, disposal of human and animal waste, environmental cleanliness, food handling, to name a few. Each month a different expert will present to the group of 50 participants. Next week will mark the first training session and HRI staff in Haiti is prepping for it now. There’s lots more to tell so look for our next update on HRI 2013!!

Getting Ready for an Exciting 2013!

HRI is getting ready for an exciting 2013 with new initiatives planned in Haiti and Guatemala. Look for a new School Garden Project in Guatemala due to launch in late February, the continuation of our Garden Project in Haiti, a significant expansion of the Energy Efficient (Sustainable) Stove Project and much more! If you haven’t already joined the HRI family, please think about becoming a donor to these and our other terrific nutritional support projects for orphans and vulnerable children in Haiti and Guatemala.

Global Giving Challenge: UPDATE

Thanks to all of our great supporters we are able to report that HRI has secured a place in the Global Giving community! During the 1st weekend of the challenge, we also won a $500 bonus for the most funds raised. The Sustainable Stove Project in Guatemala is just one example of how HRI is addressing the health and welfare needs of vulnerable children in that country. We thank everyone who has donated to the project and remember – the Global Giving Challenge goes through the end of December and there are lots of monetary bonuses we can still win for funds raised and unique donors!! So, if you were meaning to give…there is still time!!

New Shelters for COEHNA Orphanage

Over the weekend a team of more than 10 men from the Sukup Corporation and Church By The Glades flew to Haiti and built 7 shelters for the 48 orphans affected by Tropical Storm Isaac. These shelters are well ventilated, roomy and each will house the children very comfortably. HRI is extremely grateful to the Sukup Corporation, Church By The Glades, Speroway and C3 Global for this tremendous support and great effort on behalf of these extremely vulnerable children.
