HRI’s Vegetable Garden Project in Haitian orphanages continues to grow with two new gardens planted just this week in the orphanages Maison Notre Dame du Lourdes and Foyer des Enfants de Jesus. These gardens, part of our two year plan to have 25+ gardens planted and producing tasty and nutritious vegetables in the orphanages where we work, are just the newest additions to the project. The 4-day training and gardening program was run by older Haitian orphans, themselves trained by OSU Prof. Lynn Brandenberger in cooperation with HRI just last month. Each garden has two assigned “caretakers,” children living in the orphanages who volunteered to take on this responsibility. Of course, all of the children are learning about gardens and participating in the project. We are extremely proud of all of the participants and will be sharing photos of this second phase shortly.
