Dear Rachel,
I just wanted to let you know that I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Haiti last week. HRI and your staff in Haiti were very professional and did a great job enabling me to provide the training that is key to helping Haitians lift themselves out of poverty. I was very impressed with the love and care that all the orphanages I visited were giving the children in their care.
I have visited other developing countries before and appreciate the seriousness of the situation that Haiti is in. There are innumerable impoverished and desperate people in the nation, but I also saw hope for this amazing nation. I truly believe that your approach to train-up leaders in orphanages to teach and involve their children in food production through gardening is a valid and expedient way to change lives and to feed this nation.
It really comes down to this: People don’t really need to be taken care of, what they require. . . what they desire is to learn and be enabled to provide and care for themselves. This garden project has the potential to not only provide for the nutritional needs of children, but it’s ultimate goal should be to inspire them to lift themselves and their country from poverty, to become involved in growing, selling food, and feeding their nation.
Blessings,
Lynn
